The Belmont Hills Golf Club is to be found on the parish of Warwick of Bermuda. It offers golfers stunning views of Hamilton Harbour. This is alongside the Great Sound and its islands. It makes the course one of the best spots to enjoy a round of golf on the island.
The Belmont Hills Golf Club is one of the two courses designed by Devereux Emmet (the other one is the oldest course in Bermuda, the Riddell’s Bay Golf). It was originally built in 1924. But the course underwent a complete renovation in 2003, with a design by Algie Pulley. It turned out to be the most expensive rebuilding operation ever on a golf course in Bermuda.
The golf course was previously known as the Belmont Golf and Country Club. It was renamed as Belmont Hills after the Belmont Hotel closed. It is now part of the Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort and Spa. This is an 18-hole par 70, 6,100 yards long course with many heavy bunkers and multi-tiered greens (Tiff Eagle Bermuda Grass). The course is also equipped with tight fairways (419 Bermuda Grass) and 14,000 square feet of double green. It is the only one of its kind on the island. The course is considered far more challenging since the renovation. It is said to have the finest 18 holes on the island.
It might look like a straightforward and short course, mostly enjoyed by beginners. But according to that golfer who commented on Trip Advisor:
“The six thousand yards may seem easy but unless your tee ball is accurate, you’ll be hitting three off the tee, in a trap, or blocked out by trees.”
Another reviewer warns that:
“the challenge begins once you get to the greens.18 multi level greens can give you nightmares if you are on the wrong level.”
There are other major obstacles added by Algie Pulley. This takes in various water hazards, especially the lake that has been located between holes 2, 7 and 8. They have a total capacity of over a million gallons. The course has an automatic irrigation system, ensuring that even under the sub-tropical climate of Bermuda, the fairways and greens are kept in perfect condition.
The course has cart and club for rent, and like for all courses in Bermuda, formal clothing is required. Metal spikes are not allowed at the Belmont Hills, only soft spike. But shoes may be rented too. There is also an award-winning restaurant near the golf course, the Blu Bar & Grill, to replenish your energy after a round of golf.
