Vehicles

[+]What vehicles can I rent?

You can rent hybrid electric bikes, mountain bikes, electric scooters, gas-powered scooters and mopeds. Elbow Beach Cycles has the newest fleet on the road in Bermuda. We also have the most wide-ranging fleet. You get plenty of choice. Find out more.

[+]What are hybrid electric bikes?

Hybrid electric bikes are bicycles that run on battery power or pedal power. They look much like ordinary bicycles, but they have a 200W motor that makes riding them effortless. They’re reliable, stylish, cost less than a dollar a day to run, and are an excellent choice for people who don’t want to ride a scooter. The minimum age restriction for riding a hybrid electric bike is 16 years. Find out more about our 5th generation, Freedom-series hybrid electric bikes.

[+]What are electric scooters?

They’re just like gas-powered scooters except that they run on near-silent and emission-free battery power. They’re as powerful and as reliable as gas scooters, but a shade more stylish and a whole lot cheaper to run. Find out how to explore the island on a high-tech vehicle with minimal running costs.

[+]What are ‘collections’?

Elbow Beach Cycles has three ‘collections': Fun, Green, and Prestige.
• The Green Collection contains our most eco-friendly vehicles.
• The Fun Collection contains our gas-powered scooters. It’s a range of well-tuned vehicles for everyday business and vacation transport.
• The Prestige Collection is for more discerning clients. It contains our advanced sports scooters, the SE Extraordinary Adventure Scooter.

[+]Do you have scooters for one or two people?

Yes, we have a huge choice of scooters for single riders or riders with passengers. Models J1, S1, and SE are for single riders.
Models S2, S6, S8, and SE8 are for riders with passengers.

[+]Do you have scooters for three people?

No. Bermuda law limits scooters to a maximum of two people.

[+]What size scooter or bicycle is right for me?

See our Fleet page for rough guides on scooter and bicycle sizes. If you’re not sure, we can sort out the right sized vehicle when you get to the shop. Since we have Bermuda’s most diverse rental fleet, we’re always able to find a scooter or bicycle that’s right for your height and build.

[+]Is a gas scooter the same as a petrol scooter?

Yes, in Bermuda and in America, the word for ‘petrol’ is ‘gas’. So a ‘gas scooter’ is a ‘petrol scooter’, and a ‘gas station’ is a ‘petrol station’.

Getting Started

[+]Will you teach me to drive safely?

Of course we will. So long as you can ride a bicycle, we can teach you to ride a scooter safely. Our industry-leading instruction method, YouDrive™, is designed to get you driving. You get unlimited lessons, and you won’t have to set off on your own until you feel 100% confident on the road. That’s why we have by far the best safety record among Bermuda’s scooter hire companies. All tuition is free.

[+]What if I’ve never ridden a scooter before?

That’s not a problem. Thousands of our customers were once first-timers. We’ll give you all the tuition and support you need to ride safely on Bermuda’s roads. All we ask is that you know how to ride a bicycle.

[+]Do you offer a free collection or drop-off service?

Yes, we do. Our free shuttle bus will collect you from your hotel, cruise ship, airport etc, and whisk you to our pretty rental shop at Elbow Beach. Some guests prefer to be dropped off conveniently at the end of their rental. That’s fine too. You can choose whether you prefer to be picked up at the start or dropped off at the end.Safety is paramount at Elbow Beach Cycles, so we have to be sure that you are a confident driver before we’ll let you ride away. If you’ve prepaid and there’s somewhere safe near your hotel where we can run scooter tuition, we may well be able to deliver your scooter to you.In exceptional circumstances – returning guests, for example, who have previously been through scooter tuition – we can deliver to you without additional tuition. Scooter delivery is always at the discretion of the duty manager.

[+]Do you serve cruise ships?

Yes. Many of our customers are cruise-ship passengers. They like the idea that they can explore the island independently instead of waiting around for crowded buses or paying a fortune for taxis. We even run a free shuttle service to collect you from your ship or drop you off safely afterwards. If you book now, we’ll be waiting for you when you land.

[+]What if my cruise ship docks at two different ports in Bermuda?

That’s not a problem. We can deliver your vehicle to you in one port and collect it later from another. The service is free.

[+]Do you deliver to Bermuda International Airport?

Sometimes. Bermuda law requires us to give everyone instruction which we cannot do in the busy areas around the airport. It’s just too hazardous for beginners. However, if you are a returning guest who is already confident on a scooter, we may – at our discretion – deliver to the airport.

Rental Periods and Payments

[+]For how long can I rent a scooter or bicycle?

As long as you like. Anything from three hours to several months. You can hire a vehicle to nip round the island for a few hours while your cruise ship is in port, keep it for a few days to get in plenty of sightseeing or, if you’re here on business, ride it for as long as the project lasts.

[+]Can I extend my rental period?

Yes, just pick up the phone and let us know. If you’re not staying at the Elbow Beach Bermuda Resort & Spa, you’ll need your credit card handy so that we can take payment.

[+]What credit cards do you accept?

Visa, American Express, MasterCard, and Bermuda Card. If you have your card to hand, you can book your vehicle right now.

[+]When is my card charged?

If you take advantage of our fabulous prepaid discount rates, we’ll charge your card on the day you book. If you use your card to make a pay-on-collection booking, we’ll charge you on the day you start your rental.

[+]When and where do I pay if I haven’t prepaid?

If you prepay, everything is sorted long before you arrive. If you prefer to wait till you get to Bermuda, you’ll need to arrange payment before you can ride off. We accept most major credit cards – Visa, American Express, MasterCard, and Bermuda Card – and travellers’ cheques or cash. If you’re staying at the Elbow Beach Bermuda Resort & Spa, we’ll come to you because we’re right next door.

Roads Rules and Regulations

[+]Are there any mileage limits?

No. You can drive for as many miles as you like. Depending on what vehicle you hire, we’ll start you off with a full tank of gas or a fully charged battery. All we ask is that you return your scooter to us with a full tank of gas. But there’s no need to charge the batteries of electric scooters or hybrid electric bikes before you return them.

[+]Can children ride scooters?

Yes, but only as passengers of adults aged 18 or over. 18 is the minimum age for driving a scooter. There are height restrictions for child passengers. As a rough guide, any child aged four or less is unlikely to be tall enough to ride. One of our relationship managers will be happy to answer additional questions. There is no minimum age for riding a mountain bike.

[+]Do you provide helmets?

Yes, we fit out all riders with a clean, properly fitting helmet. There’s no charge for a helmet.

[+]Do you provide locks?

Yes, every scooter, bicycle, and hybrid electric bike comes with an industry-standard lock. Scooters and mopeds also have lockable under-seat storage boxes.

Rental rates and Offers

[+]What are your rental rates?

Rental rates depend on the vehicle you choose and how long you want it for. The longer the hire period, the cheaper it gets. All prices are quoted in Bermuda dollars. See our price list here.

[+]Do you run special offers?

Yes, we do. For example, you can book online now for an instant 10% discount. That’s just one of several offers that we’re currently running. You can see them here.

Checkout Questions

[+]What does the repair waiver cover?

The non-refundable repair waiver (NRRW) brings you peace of mind. If you damage your vehicle, you don’t have to pay a cent because the NRRW covers you against the cost of repairs. In Bermuda, scooter rental companies are obliged to charge an NRRW because other insurances (on credit cards, for example) don’t cover the cost of accidental damage. The NRRW does not apply to damage caused by theft, attempted theft, or vandalism.

[+]What if I change my mind after prepaying?

If you prepay when you book online, your booking is guaranteed. No one else can use your vehicles because they are allocated to you. That’s our commitment to you. But that means we cannot refund your fees (including taxes and other charges) in full or in part if you subsequently change your mind. If we can, we’ll do our best to change your start date or extend your rental period. Any changes are at our discretion.
