About the Bermuda PGA Grand Slam
Golf is an enduring passion on Bermuda, with more courses per resident than anywhere else in the world. With a climate ranging year-round from about 68° to 86°F, and fabulous scenery, too, it all adds up to a memorable sporting experience.
Of course, with major champions on show in the glorious sunshine, that applies to spectators as well. It might be hard to qualify for the Bermuda PGA, but at least getting there is easy. Rent an electric scooter or bike from Elbow Beach Cycles and buzz along to the rolling grasslands and ocean views of the Port Royal Golf Course.
The 6,842 manicured yards add up to the longest and most beautiful course on the island. It’s also one that features what 2010 champion Ernie Els described as one of the toughest holes in golf. It’s the 16th, and it requires a steady nerve and a firm drive right across the ocean.
Designed by famous course architect Robert Trent Jones, who believes it to be his finest outside the US, the Port Royal Golf Course opened in 1970. Renovated in 2009 at a cost of over $13 million, it’s a par-71 course that will test even the best players. Played in mid-October in near-perfect weather, the PGA offers a $1.35 million purse to its celebrated competitors.
